Music Video Project

For my Media Studies class, I had to do a music video project with a group of my friends. This music video project consisted of us having to choose a holiday song for the first part of our project then we had to do a script write, storyboard, film, edit, publish the final project. 

                           Song choice/ concept summary

The project first started with us having to write the people in our groups names on a sheet of paper, then we pick the song of our choice which was Winter Wonderland by  Bryson Tiller and then we jotted down some ideas of what the concept of the video was going to be. For example, we wrote down that we were going to have people dancing in our video for the instrumental parts, different shots of us singing different lyrics of the song,  

                                     Script Writing

In addition, to us choosing the song/concept summer we had to script write. When doing our script write we used studio binder to look at the way in which it was done. We looked over the things on the example, we made are own using the feature that studio binder had that allowed us to script write. Provided that, we  did our own script write giving details about the 8 scenes we had. The details of consisted of where we were going to film(setting) and the lines we were going to say in each scene.

                                         Storyboard

For the storyboard we had to do it on a word document using the storyboard templates on studio binder. In the storyboard we had to number the scenes, the shots in the scene, and we had to correlate the shot size to the duration of the song for everyone's part. After that I added a description for each shot in the scene for example, the description would consist of me saying whos part it is for that scene along with the what kind of camera shot in is(medium shot, medium close up, and long shot.) 

                                       Filming/editing

The filming process was easy but we had to keep filming some shots either because we didn't like it and we keep messing up. The filming process took us about 3-4 days and within those days we were able to get the shots down. Once we finished filming the day after we started editing. We started editing in class but we had to finish the rest once we got home. The editing software we used was clipchamp, we inserted the videos and got to editing. We took some parts out, added transition's like fade in/fade out.

            Introduction to Cinematography

Cinematography in media is the act of capturing photographic images in space through the use of a number of controllable elements. When looking at cinematography, it involves a number of techniques to compose a scene; the lighting of the set or location; the camera angle and movements; and the integration of any special effects from editing. Cinematography has a huge role in film because it's basically how a movie is constructed from the ground up. 

                                                              Background Research           

 In filmmaking there are various types of camera angles within a shot/scene. 

A shot is an unbroken span of action captured by an interrupted run of motion picture camera. When looking at the different camera types, the main types are close up, medium shot, long shot, extreme close up, extreme long shot, high Ange, low angle, and point of view shot. For instance, medium shots frames person from the chest up. Conventionally, medium shots generally frame subjects from chest or shoulders up. 

                                                      Content Application

The content that I applied for cinematography is identifying shot types and angles. For this assignment, I used my phone camera and my subjects(classmates) to capture multiple shots and different angles of them. First I put my subjects in different settings/areas. Next, I used my phone camera app that had different lenses that zoomed out further for the extreme long shots and the other lens that zoomed in closer for the close up shots. After I have taken all my shots I inserted them into a document, labeled which one was which, and added a few examples.

                                                                              Reflection

My reflection is that the act of capturing photographic images in space using a number of controllable factors is known as cinematography in the media. Cinematography is extremely important in film because it is essentially how a film is built from the ground up. Within a shot or scene in filmmaking, there are many different camera angles such as close-up, medium-shot, long-shot, extreme-close-up, extreme-long-shot, high-angle, low-angle, and point-of-view shots.

Mise-en-scene

                   Mise-en-scene Introduction 

Mise-en-scene is the overall look and feel of a movie; the sum of everything the audience sees, hears, and experiences while viewing it. When looking for mise-en-scene you want to look for everything in the frame, this can affect how the audience may think of the characters and story, creating a mood/theme. Two major key componets for looking at mise-en-scene is design and composition. Design is the look of the setting, props, lighting and actors. Also composition is the organization, distribution, balance, and general relationship of actors and objects.

                                                    Background research 

When analyzing mise-en-scene you want to look at the visual composition of that shot, which means you need to critically analyze the overall look and feel that can influence our moods as we watch. Once you analze it you can do these steps to read mise-en-scene. Step 1: say what you see, for instance consider the categories costume, hair, lighting, and props. Step 2: you want to consider the purpose of the scene by seeing how the aesthetic helps to establish the purpose. The most powerful impression we take from first viewing is looking at the design: the way the actors, setting, and decor in a movie look. This can help to suggest the characters state of mind; and relations to developing the theme. By viewing the frame and spotting the components of mise-en-scene we can view the film in a different perspective.

                                                     Content Application

The content application that was applied for the photography mini project was using an arrangement of items/props to stage an illusion using mise-en-scene elements. First me and my partner sketched out the idea we were going to do which was supermarket robbery. Then, we brought the illousion to life by buying a few props that helped to go with the theme. Next, we arranged them in the placement we had liked, took a few photos with a ring light and added a  contrast from a book which is used to catch a shadow. Last, I submitted the all the photos including the final image and I included a short paragraph about how mise- en- scene was used in the photo.

                                                        Reflection

What I got from this mise-en-scene lesson is that looking at the design: how the actors, scenery, and decor in a movie look is the most intense impression we get from first watching. The overall appearance and feel of a film is defined as the sum of everything the spectator sees, hears, and experiences while watching it. 

This contribute to the development of the theme by implying the characters' state of mind.
