Post Production

                           Post Production

Looking at my first rough cut, I have noticed that the media product that my group created didn't really convey the meaning of what it was supposed to. So our teacher had enlightened us of things we needed to critique such as cutting out the dialogue and adding a dream sequence to give the intended meaning of the horror movie. When editing our production we mostly used straight cuts to show the different areas of the school/library, a shot reverse shot was also used in order to demonstrate that dialogue was taking place, and  dissolves to express that its a dream sequence as well as to show that the opening scene has started after the branding.

Technology:

  • From the start and to the end of filmmaking, we used technology that was easily accessible for us like a iPhone 11 and iPhone 12. During this we had to switch between devices considering the fact that we had storage problems with the 12 so we went to the 11 though they had different qualities so we had to change the camera settings to 4k.
  • From what I've learned from postproduction technologies, the second time we filmed we ran into a branding issue were we tried to remove the clothing brands from clothing by using photoshop but once I tried editing the video on photoshop I realized that in order to remove the brand you had to erase it frame by frame which was going to take up time so we just re filmed. Then for editing the opening scene we used wevideo.com which was quite easy so we just edited it to our liking as well as following the conventions of a horror film.

Editing:

  • Once we started to use Wevideo to edit our shots together, we added a black and white filter over it in order to create the meaning that the emotion of fear as well as mystery. Then when it came from inserting the sound we added creepy music and sounds from the killer to make it a thrill. For other clips we created our own sound by recording it like the knocking, the gasp to add a sense of urgency/uneasiness.

Branding

                               Branding

Branding Process

When we first got the assignment to create our production company we each started to brainstorm names on what we wanted it to be. As we were listening to each others names Evicka came up with a creative name, Jen-z. We liked this name idea considering that it pertained to all of our names and we were apart of generation z; J is for Ja'Niyah, E is for Evicka, N is for Nia, and Z is for Zhanae. After that we look at all of the options of names commonly used in films like productions, studios, motion pictures, and films. So the final name that we came up with is Jen-z Productions and then we all created our own production company videos.

Filming Process

Once we finished the preproduction portion, we went straight into filming as soon as we could. Originally we were supposed film from February 22-25 but during those days we were working on getting our blog post done, testing out a editing software, and making branding for this opening scene. Since we didn't get to film during those days so our teacher gave us another week to get our filming done. Within this week on Monday we started filming the easiest shots of library on a (iPhone 11 and iPhone 12) and the natural school lighting since we also had pictures to take on that day, Tuesday we had to submit the branding, then on Wednesday and Thursday we only did some of the shoots me, Zhanae, and Evicka were in since Ja'Niyah wasn't here for those days and on Friday we plan on finishing up the rest of the shoots that were all in. From filming parts of this opening scene, I have learned that by using a phone is just as good as using a camera as long as you know how to use it and get the right angles in order to convey the meaning through the video. For example, in the killer scene we had to make it a low angle shot to make him look more powerful and we had to do a low angle shot since he wasn't that tall. For these shots we didn't use any tutorials since the the equipment/cameras were quit simple to use and me and my group went through different ideas of how these shots should be filmed so it can reflect the conventions of a horror movie.

                                                 Bloopers/ A-ha Moments

In this shoot we had to redo it multiple times because we wanted it to look like camera was following her but the video was on time lapse.

In this shot we had to redo it since the video was in slow motion and the angle wasn't exactly how we wanted it

For this video it keep stopping due to me not having any storage so I had to clear it out

Preproduction

                           Preproduction

For my portfolio project, me and my group(Zhanae, Evicka, Ja'Niyah) are creating a horror movie opening scene that will follow all the conventions of the horror genre. Before we started this project, we picked are groups by interviewing our classmates, once we found the people we wanted to be in are groups based on the questions we asked. The next day we were giving a group contract that we had to sign and give back. Right after that, that's when we actually started on the planning process, we made a short story that consist of what our story will pertain followed by the different plot points. Once we turned in our story, we research different things in the horror movie genre to understand what these films consist of, then we did our script and storyboard.

Case study

                                The ring

History/target audience

The director Gore Verbinski created this movie to portray the genre of a supernatural/horror film to the audience of pre-teens and adults(pg-13 rated). It is based off of the supernatural horror novel written by Koji Suzuki published in 1991.

Production

The ring was produced by Walter F. Parkes. This film was produced by Blumhouse Productions which is mainly known for producing horror films. The ring(2002) had a budget of $48,000which was a large amount for a horror film. Provided that, this is the biggest budget Blumhouse Productions as given in the last 20 years which was 20 million from US(2019).

Distribution

The ring was distributed by DreamWorks Pictures. This film was theatrically released on October 18,2002 and was put onto multiple streaming services. Some of these streaming services consist of paramount plus, Hulu plus, iTunes, amazon instant video, google play, and Vudu.

Marketing

In order for them to advertise the movie, they created many promotional websites that showed a preview of the character and the places of the film. After that physical VHS copies were distributed outside of the theaters by placing the tapes on windshields of peoples cars. This initial success came from DreamWorks which helped to increase the film into 700 additional theaters. The ring made $8.3million in its first two weeks in Japan and $6.6 millions total box office.

Cross-media convergence and synergy

This film has a introduction that brings interest to the audience when it says based on true events, this has many viewers wondering if the haunted videotape is actually real which helps to increase the sales price.
